La Citadelle de Marseille is committed to preserving the soil, which is considered a living heritage and a non-renewable resource, starting in 2022. Faced with the issue of pollution, as are all green spaces in an urban environment, La Citadelle de Marseille has joined forces with AMU and the LPED laboratory to think about nature-based solutions that could be tested in an area of La Citadelle de Marseille and offer a demonstrator in the heart of the city.
On September 23, 2022, a round table entitled “The soil, our living heritage”, took place at La Citadelle de Marseille. It marked the launch of REMEDSPACE, a European project – New European Bauhaus – to share nature-based solutions for preserving soils and initiated the first workshop for the co-construction of a support structure for companies wishing to devote themselves to nature-based solutions applied to soils.
This approach is the winner of the New European Bauhaus project

In parallel, an artist residency focusing on polluted soils is underway since September 2022. The artist, Louise Nicollon des Abbayes, will use La Citadelle de Marseille as her research, creation and production material, and will present her work to the general public during meetings to be arranged together.
Participatory workshops with the artist will be offered on this page in the near future.
Finally, in the spaces that will be open to the public in the near future, which do not have an alarming level of pollution, a scientific mediation device will be designed to illustrate the history of these soils, present their composition, and explain the choices in terms of flora and landscaping under study and in resonance with its nature of living soil.
